12/29/2023 0 Comments Rad tech salary right out of schoolFlexibility of schedule (Mon-Fri? Nights/Weekends?) Below each career option, research and then make note of the following: Make a bullet point for each potential career option - list anything and everything that interests you. I think you need to sit down in a quiet place, sort out your thoughts, and write them down so that you can process this in an organized manner (I used Google Docs because it's easy to edit and accessable from my phone). But, eventually the catch-up does happen and keeps growing from there (unless you had a poor choice of degree/career). It took a long time of working after college and paying back debt to catch-up to peers that went straight to the trades without debt. Take on debt to go to college, or go work in the trades. This is similar to the conundrum many faced in my generation (X) when we finished high-school. As you advance and become more skilled in X-Ray, you should grow your salary more than just COLA. They aren't going to grow much beyond cost of living adjustments. In comparison to your girlfriend, she has 2 jobs that have mostly static salaries. The longer you take to get started, the longer it's going to be before you get there. You don't want to be a "slave employee?" Start working so you can advance beyond the "slave" levels and be a grown-up. You need to start having income before you can worry about how to invest, diversify, and grow. If you jump to "business" or whatever else you think you might like today, you're another few years of training away from making that entry-level wage. Entry level in any field is not going to be paying well - and you are just starting out. You just finished a degree, now let it start paying you back. I no longer recommend healthcare jobs to people who truly care about patients It’s really sad to see the kind of pettiness this has caused in people who started their career with such good intentions. Get more done, care about the patients less. You’ll be told not to spend too much time making sure that patient is comfortable. And it’s because their managers are pushing the same. Management pushes for numbers, numbers, numbers. The bottom line profit mentality has created employees that put career growth first, and caring for patients much lower on their agenda. Ever since healthcare facilities became “for profit”, quality of patient care has declined, and the culture and general goodwill of healthcare employees has rotted over time. That having been said, I’ve been a tech for almost 15 years, and while I love the actual job and find satisfaction in helping patients, I find that working in today’s healthcare system isn’t fulfilling and I don’t find much joy in the environment as a whole. Right now there are sign on bonuses in many places and good access to overtime if you want to make some extra money. It does ebb and flow over time, but it’s up now, and demand was steadily increasing even just before Covid hit, even more post pandemic. And second, demand for imaging techs has been on the rise. Up close and personal for pretty much every patient encounter. In fact I’d venture to say, when working in hospitals, we do as much lifting, pushing, and pulling as a nurse on average. It’s all about positioning each patient in a very specific way. First off, xray tech is a VERY hands on position. But I would like to counter two points you made.
